1873:  Zion Hill Baptist Church established. Members from Sugar Loaf Baptist Church helped in the organization.

1873:  When Zion Hill was established, the church held services once a month, on Saturday and Sunday.

1874:  Petitioned by people meeting at Whittle's Schoolhouse to come and help organize a church. Zion Hill responded by sending six: William & Mary Odem, Mary, Margaret & Matilda Nichols and Nancy Sexton. They helped organize Shiloh Baptist Church.

1874:  Margaret Clark died, January 15, 1874. Oldest legible monument in the cemetery.


1886:  Sevier Baptist Association was formed from Southern Baptist Churches in the county. William Ingle form Zion Hill was chosen to serve on the Christian education committee.

1886:  Zion Hill was one of 23 churches to gather at the Sevierville Church, November 5-6, 1886, to form the Sevier Baptist Association. J. M. Thomas represented Zion Hill at this meeting.

1887:  Zion Hill called Henry Gossett pastor. He was born in South Carolina, March 10, 1841, to Johnson and Sarah Gossett. He married Juda Moore, November 13, 1859. He was ordained into the Gospel ministry by Boyd's Creek Baptist Church. He pastored Zion Hill twice and directed a building program the second time he pastored. He died February 18, 1906, and is buried at Boyd's Creek.

1887:  Zion Hill sent William Brown as messenger to the first associational annual meeting at Henderson's Chapel.

1887:  Jonathan Johnson was church clerk, reporting 90 members.

1887:  Church was meeting the second weekend of the month.


1892:  Noah H. Haggard was called to pastor. He was born in 1824 to James and Mary Atchley Haggard. His father was a Baptist preacher. Noah was married to Sarah Randolph and had eight children. He stayed one year and baptized 15 into the church family.

1892:  Messengers to the association: William Brown, R. J. Ingle, and John Thomas.

1892-1896:  R. J. Ingle served as Church Clerk

1894:  Zion Hill began to have Sunday School or Sabbath School for the first time.

1894:  Enrollment for the first year was 80 with average attendance of 50.

1894:  William Brown was called as pastor. He was born May 27, 1866, to John and Martha Brown. He had a twin brother Wilson. He married N. J. Fox in 1886. He was probably ordained by Zion Hill since he was an active member of the church. He died August 11, 1949 and is buried in Zion Hill Cemetery.

1894:  Zion Hill reported 35 baptisms. William Brown was pastor.

1896: Zion Hill Baptist Church membership reached 150.

1897:  Zion Hill called Henry Gossett to pastor again.

1897:  Church constructed a new building.

1897:  Philip Cummings was Sunday School Superintendent, reporting 75 enrolled.

1897-1907:  Philip Cummings served as church clerk.

1898:  J. I. Ingle was Sunday School Superintendent

1899:  Zion Hill called William Brown to pastor again. He baptized 17 into the church that year.

1899:  Church membership reached 156.

1899:  January 27, the church joined with Gist's Creek for the Fifth Sunday meeting of the Sevier Association of Baptists.


1900:  William Hurst was called as pastor. He was born in 1860 and served two pastorates at Zion Hill. The first from 1900 to 1903 then again from 1906 to 1909. In 1906, he baptized 21 and saw membership reach 170 in 1907. He died in 1923 and is buried at Walnut Grove.

1900-1906:  Philip Cummings served as Church Clerk.

1903:  The church called Caleb Rule. He was born in 1840 and survived a Civil War prison camp and the explosion on the Mississippi River of the Sultana, a steamboat carrying prisoners of war to Ohio to be mustered out of service. He only stayed at Zion Hill one year. He died in 1913 and is buried at Pleasant Hill.

1903:  Zion Hill hosted the Tenth District Sunday School Convention of the Sevier Association. As announced in the May 20, 1903 edition of Montgomery's Vindicator: The program will be held May 24, 1903 at Zion Hill and begin at 2:00 P. M. with devotional exercises by P. Cummings. Three questions will be discussed: How can we get the people interested in the Sunday School work? To be discussed by J. F. Ingle and G. F. Rule. On whom does the responsibility of the Sunday School rest? To be discussed by J. R. Clabough, D. L. Parsons. And Object of the Sunday School Convention? To be discussed by C. Rule and J. R. Tarwater.

1904:  J. R. Clabough was called as pastor. He stayed 2 years. He pastored many other churches in Sevier, Blount, and Monroe counties.

1904:  Pastor's salary increased to $30.00 a year.

1904:  Sunday School began meeting all 12 months of the year.

1906:  Pastor's salary increased to $60.00 per year.

1907-1908:  Eli Baker served as Church Clerk.

1909:   The church called Wiley Conner. He was born 1865 in North Carolina and had a powerful ministry in East Tennessee. In 1909, he baptized 44 into the church family. He only stayed one year, but returned to preach a revival in 1916 with 50 decisions recorded. He died 1933 and is buried at Knob Creek.

1909:  Wiley Conner baptized 44 into the church and received 16 new members by letter. Membership grew to 227.

1909:  S. H. Clark was Superintendent of Sunday School.

1909-1911:  John Cutshaw served as Church Clerk.

1909-1911:  Sunday School Superintendents for the 1900s included J. G. Ingle, Philip Cummings, J. H. Latham, John Cutshaw, and S. H. Clark.

1909-1911:  Zion Hill Baptist Church held services the second Saturday and Sunday of the month.


1910:  Zion Hill called Middleton McCarter as pastor. He stayed 2 years. He was born April 6, 1854, to James and Euna McCarter. He married Sarah Ruth Tyson and had 10 children. He was ordained by Rocky Grove Baptist Church, August 14, 1893. He died December 29, 1925, and is buried in Huskey Cemetery.

1912:  Zion Hill called Joe Albert Atchley. He served 3-1/2 years. He was born December 22, 1872, to Westley and Rebecca Atchley. He married Delilah Connaster and had 11 children. He died April 10, 1948, and is buried at Cummings Chapel.

1916:  Zion Hill called Sidney Clark as pastor. He served 2 years. He was born June 23, 1886, to Anderson and Angie Clark. He married Rachel Ingle and had 11 children. He was ordained into the gospel ministry by Zion Hill, July 5, 1913. He pastored 18 churches during his 68 year ministry. He lived to be 95 years old and preached sitting in a chair until a few months before his death. He died June 28, 1981, and is buried in Zion Hill cemetery.

1910:  Pastor's salary increased to $75.00 annually.

1910:  Messengers to the Association meeting at Wear's Valley: Maud Clark, S. H. Clark, and Scott Galyon.

1911:  Messengers to the Association meeting at Beech Springs: S. H. Clark, Scott Galyon, G. W. Marine, and J. A. Rogers.

1911:  Sunday School Secretaries for the decade included Alice Marine, Titia Clark, Alice Galyon, Neuricia Clark, Flora Shelly, and Carl Conner.

1911:  Pastor's Salary raised to $100.00 annually.

1913:  Zion Hill gave $30.00 to the poor.

1913:  Deacons of the church: Eli Baker, Ben Clark, Boyd Clark, John Cutshaw, A. S. Galyon, J. F. Ingle, Boyd Johnson, and J. C. Stoner.

1913:  Sunday School enrollment listed as 120 with an average of 80. John Cutshaw was Sunday School Superintendent.

1916:  Reported 44 baptisms and 16 additions by letter. Church excluded 8 members for covenant breaking.

1918:  Messengers to the Association meeting at Evan's Chapel No. 1: J. A. Baker, Mr. & Mrs. Scott Galyon, J. F. Ingle, and A. J. Stoner.

1918:  Sunday School enrollment listed as 140. Ira Clark was Sunday School Superintendent.

1919:  Church membership reached 249.

1919:  Congregation meeting second Saturday and Sunday of the month.

1911:  New church building constructed, a white woodframe building.

1912: Hosted the 27th annual session of the Sevier Association of Baptists. Rev. J. A. Atchley served as moderator. Messengers from Zion Hill: James Bales, S. H. Clark, Mrs. Belle Galyon, Reuben Knight, and G. W. Marine. Dr. George F. Bostick, missionary from China, shared about his mission work.


1920:  John O. Hood came as pastor and stayed until 1922. He was born March 25, 1894, to William and Sarah Hood. He married Dosha Rogers in 1923. He was called to ordination by Knob Creek Baptist Church, but was ordained by the First Baptist Church, Greenville, SC, April 28, 1918, before being sent to Europe into World War I. He pastored for 45 years, mostly in Blount County. While at Zion Hill, he also pastored Dupont, Shiloh, and Sugar Loaf.

1922:   Charles D. Martin was called during the church's annual call and stayed until 1924. He was ordained into the gospel ministry by Zion Hill on September 10, 1922, along with Jason Baker. Zion Hill was his first pastorate and he left to attend Carson-Newman for pastor training. He was called as the first associational missionary for the Chilhowee Association, October 1940, after successful pastorates.

1924:   Rev. J. L. Helton was called at the age of 20 and stayed through most of 1926. He was ordained by Shiloh in Dec. 1923. Zion Hill was also his first pastorate. He served New Era Baptist Church the same time. His parents were Harrison & Polly Helton. He married Lela Clark two years after leaving Zion Hill.

1921 :  Rev. Hood appointed A. J. Stoner, W. E. Ballard, and Oscar Shelley as committee to plan a program for decoration.

1921:  Zion Hill annually called its pastor. Each September, the church elected a pastor for the next year. He was to preach 3 sermons a month, Saturday morning, Saturday night and Sunday morning.

1921:  December, Zion Hill sold the oil lamps and carpets in the church for $20.00 and bought new lamps from Sam Boling.

1922:  September, revival conducted by Rev. W. A. Masterson. Church received 22 members by experience and baptism.

1922:  September, church members met at 3:00 P. M. for the purpose of ordaining C. D. Martin and J. A. Baker to the ministry. The Presbytery included the following ministers: W. A. Masterson, S. H. Clark, J. O. Hood, W. R. King and deacons from other sister churches together with Zion Hill deacons. After the exam, a motion and it sustained by the church to propose with the ordination which was carried out and they stand now as ordained ministers of Christ's gospel (from church minutes)

October 1922:  Moderator appointed a committee to look after the members who are walking disorderly

February 1923:  Withdrew fellowship from 13 members for covenant breaking.

June 1923:  Moderator appointed Scott Galyon, W. B. Clark, and Anderson Rodgers as committee to have church house painted. Also, appointed a committee to get money to paint the church house. Those appointed were Neva Pitner, Lela Galyean and May Rodgers. Cost of paint and work, $125.60.

August 1923:  Revival led by Rev. Albert Hall with 18 added to church, 13 by baptism.

February 24, 1924:  Zion Hill had a guest speaker, Hiroji Kuriya from Japan, a student at Carson-Newman College. He talked about Japanese customs, his voyage to the United States and then shared his testimony. A collection was taken for him and received $7.50.

1925:  Saturday, April 25 was set to clean off cemetery.

1925: Program committee for Decoration Bruce Reed, Hubert Galyean, May Rogers, and Neva Clark.

1925:  October 18, committee on covering the house was empowered to purchase the roofing and have the house covered immediately even if the material has to be purchased on credit. The committee was also instructed to employ an efficient tinner to do the work.

1925:  Church met Christmas Day to take an offering for the Orphan's Home. Collection was $10.60.

1926:  January, committee appointed to make out a report of the members that belong to Zion Hill. The lists would be for members that we don't know where they are, those members unfaithful to the church, and those who are walking disorderly. Another list would be for those faithful to the church. Committee - A. J. Stoner, J. H. Teague, and L. J. Moore.

1926:  November, committee was appointed to get a new heating stove.

1927:  Rev. J. H. Blair was called and stayed the rest of the decade. This term at Zion Hill is the longest on record to date, he stayed 8 years, until 1935. This was the beginning of his pastoral ministry at Zion Hill which included service in every decade from the 20s to the 60s. In 1928, he also pastored Knob Creek. He died in 1969 and is buried at Boyd's Creek.

1928:  Church meeting 3rd Saturday and Sunday of the month. Services were Saturday morning, Saturday night, Sunday morning, and Sunday night.

1928:  Began taking mission offering.


1930 to 1938:  Church met the third Saturday and Sunday of the month.

1930:  Pastor's salary was $200.00 a year.

W. R. Conner served as Church Clerk from 1930 to 1939.

1931:  June - Zion Hill joined with other churches in the Sevier Baptist Association to take a special offering for the Mountain Schools on Educational Day. The gifts were divided among Chilhowee Institute, Smoky Mountain Academy, and Cosby Academy.

1933:  Zion Hill reported 23 baptisms, Rev. J. H. Blair, pastor.

1932:  Rev. J. H. Blair was pastor of Zion Hill, quarter time. He also preached at Gist's Creek (1st Sunday of the month), Shiloh (2nd Sunday of the month), Zion Hill (3rd Sunday of the month), and Knob Creek (4th Sunday of the month).

The following was copied from the 1930 church minutes:

1936:  October 17 - Church appointed a committee to see to the building of Sunday School rooms. Those appointed were W. R. Conner, Otis Baker, and Winfred Norton.

1936:  December 19 - The committee on building the Sunday School rooms made their report and was released.

1936:  December - Rev. Floyd Langston brought a sermon on Temperance.

1936:  Fifth Sunday in November, November 29, Zion Hill ordained Roy Galyon & W. R. Conner as deacons of Zion Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Holmes Galyon brought the message.

1937:  April 17 - Bruce Reed, Nelson Cutshaw, and W. R. Conner were appointed trustees for the graveyard

1937:  Committee was appointed to check on buying a piano for the church

1937:  Church house was painted at cost of $70.00

1938:  April 10 - Church was called in session for the purpose of calling a pastor. Bro. Will Weaver was nominated and elected for half time, 2nd and 4th Sundays. The church set the salary at $300.00 a year. The call was unanimous. Weaver was called until August 1939. (At that time the church called annually. )

1938:  Zion Hill began revival 2nd Sunday night in September, September 11, and continued 8 days, Brother Weaver doing the preaching. There were 18 additions to the church.

1939:  February 11 - Church voted to take an offering on the second Sunday of the month for missions and a birthday offering which would be given to the Orphan's Home.


1940-1949:  :   Bruce Reed served as Church Clerk the entire decade of the 1940s.

1940:   Zion Hill called Rev. J. L. (Jepp) Helton as pastor. He served through 1945. Preacher Helton was born July 30, 1904, to Harrison and Polly Helton. He was saved when he was 13 years old. He was ordained by Shiloh Baptist Church, December 23, 1923, when he was 19 years old. He was married to Lela Clark and had 5 children. One of the highlights of his ministry at Zion Hill occurred in 1944 when he baptized 26. Preacher Helton went home to be with the Lord on July 31, 1979, after a long and fruitful ministry.

1940:  The Fifty-fifth Annual Session of the Sevier County Association of Baptists met with the Zion Hill Baptist Church, September 10, 1940, and was called to order at 9:30 A. M. by the Moderator J. A. Kyker. Opening song -- Sweet By and By. Song service throughout the meeting was led by Roy Ingle.

1943:  February 14 - Zion Hill Baptist Church building burned after the morning services. The building was made of wood and consisted of 5 classrooms in addition to the sanctuary. Insurance value of the building was $2,000.00. Congregation met in the Zion Hill Schoolhouse while church building was rebuilt.

1943:  December 6, debt on the new building paid in full. Building cost $8,551.54. Pews cost $1,167.46.

1943:  Fourth Sunday in August, congregation met in the basement of the new church building. Message was brought by Rev. S. C. Buckner, Cleveland, TN.

1943:  September, church elected Lewis Byrd janitor for one year and also to take care of the graveyard for $150. 00 per year.

1943:  Cost to rebuild church: $9922.81. Building committee for the new church building consisted of Otis Baker, W. R. Conner, and W. H. Pitner.

1944:  April 30 - the Zion Hill Baptist Church met for and all day service for the purpose of Dedication of the new church. Those who preached were Rev. Sam Atchley, Rev. S. H. Clark, and Rev. J. Harold Smith. Then lunch. After lunch, Rev. W. E. Conner preached the Dedication Sermon. Rev. C. D. Martin spoke, then prayer by Rev. Sam Atchley, then adjourned. The committee composed of Rev. J. L. Helton, pastor; Rev. J. L. Carr, Roy Ingle, Boyd Clark, and Bruce Reed. (Taken from church minutes)

1944:  October 8 - the Zion Hill Baptist Church met on Sunday. The church was called to order by the Pastor, who read a letter from a Chaplain in France stating that Johnnie Green had been baptized by him and that Johnnie Green wanted to join the Zion Hill Baptist Church. A motion and it seconded to take Johnnie Green in on enrollment. Rev. J. L. Helton, moderator Bruce Reed, Church Clerk. (Taken from minutes)

1944:  W. R. Conner & family donated the bell for the new church building.

1944:  Fifth Sunday in April set aside for Dedication of new building.

1944:  Took an offering for the Red Cross. Received $59.56.

1944:  May 13 - Observed the Lord's Supper. Rev. Helton helped by Rev. J. L. Carr and Rev. Holmes Galyon.

1944:  Revival in August led by Rev. Tommy Roberts from Third Creek Baptist Church. Had 15 professions and baptisms.

1945:  At April business meeting, congregation selected Mrs. Winfred Norton, Mrs. Andy Rogers, and Reba Carr to make out program for Decoration.

1945:  Revival led by J. Harold Smith.

1946:  Roy Arwood came as pastor and stayed one year. He was born July 5, 1918, to John and Adra Arwood. He was married to Lois Reagan and had 2 daughters, Judy and Freddie Sue. He was ordained by Union Valley in 1940. He will be remembered for the churches he started, including Bells Chapel and Fellowship Baptist in Lenoir City. He passed away March 4, 1985 and is buried in Lake Side Cemetery, Lenoir City.

1947:  J. H. Blair was called to serve as pastor. He served until 1953 and pastored two churches at the same time. He preached at Providence Baptist Church on 411 the 1st and 3rd Sundays and Zion Hill the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

1947:  May 27 - Zion Hill Baptist Church made a $5.00 deposit to the Sevier County Electric System to get on line for electricity.

1949:  Held mission led Vacation Bible School, July 18-22, supervised by Gladys Longly, state Sunday School Department.

1949:  Zion Hill organized a Training Union. Winfred McCarter was chosen as the first superintendent. Enrollment the first year totalled 109 with an average of 77.


1950-1952:  Once again, men in the country were caled on to stop the spread of Communism, this time in Korea. Darrell Galyon, Gerald Householder, & Garland Rogers answered the call from Zion Hill.

1950:  Ordained W. A. Galyon, John Moore, & Clyde Ownby as Deacons.

1950:  Church met the 2nd Saturday morning & 2nd Sunday and 4th Sunday morning & night of each month. Business was usually conducted at the Saturday meeting.

1950:  Rev. Clell King preached the revival in July. There were 15 additions to the church.

1950:  A motion to give Brother Lewis Byrd $280.00 a year as custodian of the church house and cemetery.

1950:   Rev. J. H. Blair was pastor of Zion Hill. He was called in 1947 and stayed through 1953. At that time, Zion Hill had services on the second & fourth Sunday of each month.

1951:  Congregation voted to enlarge the church building. Pastor Blair appointed a building committee of Winfred McCarter, John H. Moore & Clyde Ownby.

1951:  On the 4th Sunday in July, voted to begin a daily Vacation Bible School. Preacher Blair appointed Lela McCarter & Marjorie Rogers to secure help if needed for the Bible School.

1952:  Bennie Rogers was elected janitor. He quietly and conscientiously served for 30 + years.

1952:  Baptizing for Zion Hill held at the First Baptist Church, Sevierville.

1952:  The annual Thanksgiving service was held Thanksgiving morning with the sermon by the pastor, Rev. J. H. Blair. A collection was taken for the Orphan's Home.

1953:  Voted to let the last Sunday in August be the close of the associational year, instead of the last Sunday in September.

1953:  September 13 - Rev. Robert Bushyhead, a Cherokee Indian attending Harrison-Chilhowee, filled the pulpit on the absence of the pastor. Special music was rendered by the Bushyhead family.

1953:  Church voted to give 10% of each Sunday's offering to the Cooperative Program. Prior to this vote, offerings were taken on Sunday mornings for the Cooperative Program.

1954:   Purchased new Broadman Hymnals to replace the worn out ones.

1954:  Brother W. A. Galyon preached his first sermon, August 29.

1954:  Church called Alvie Rogers as the first full time preacher. His salary would be $50.00 on the 2 & 4 Sundays and a free will offering on the 1, 3 & 5 Sundays. One month later, his salary was increased to $60.00 each week.

1954:  October 5 - licensed W. A. Galyon to preach.

1954:  Church voted to discontinue the 2nd Saturday meeting and have the business meeting the 2nd Wednesday night of each month.

1954:  October - Alvie Rogers was called as pastor. This was his first pastorate. He was born December 9, 1922, to W. L. & Lillie Rogers. He was married to Lucille Howard and had two children, Charles & Evelyn. He was ordained by Cades Cove Memorial Baptist Church. He had a dynamic ministry here, baptizing 20 in 1955. The Sunday School average attendance was 183 and the Training Union average attendance was 94. Tragically, Preacher Rogers was killed in an automobile accident in October, 1955.

1955:  James Tilley was called after Preacher Roger's death to help the church deal with the shock of losing their beloved pastor. He was born October 23, 1912, to John and Nanny Tilley. He was saved in his mid 20's and felt the call to preach in the 1930s. He was ordained by the First Baptist Church, Sweetwater. He was married to Nellie Sue Colquitt and had three children. He pastored 18 churches. (Taken from church minutes)

1955:  October 7 - Bro. Alvie Rogers, our pastor, was killed in an automobile accident, October 7, 1955, on Chapman Highway near Uncle Labe Latham's place, Friday, October 7, around 5:00 P. M. and Atchley of Sevierville was called and he was taken to the Baptist Hospital in Knoxville but he never regained consciousness. Funeral services were held Monday, October 10, 1955, at Zion Hill Baptist Church at 2:30 P. M. Funeral was conducted by Rev. James Tilley, Rev. I. C. Frazier, and Rev. Watson. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery in Blount County. John Houston Moore, Church Clerk. Rev. Rogers accepted the church on October 10, 1954, and was buried October 10, 1955, the date from the time he accepted church, 1 year.

1955:  Church bought a $5.00 ad in the Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy annual.

1955:  Voted to raise janitor's salary from $7.00 to $10.00 per week. Also raised the pastor's salary from $60.00 to $70.00 a week.

1955:  July 3 - Zion Hill Baptst Church met for the purpose of ordaining W. A. Galyon to the ministry.

1955:  Voted to give furnace out of the old building to Shiloh Baptist Church providing they remove furnace and repair and plaster hole where parts and piping were removed.

1955:  Woman's Missionary Union established. Mrs. Paul Galyon was elected first president.

1956:  March 18, 1st baptismal service in the new baptistry at Zion Hill. Rev. Tilley baptized Brenda Cutshaw and Fred Moore. Antioch Baptist Church also took part in the service.

1956:  Hosted the opening session of the annual Sevier County Baptist Associational meeting. James H. Atchley served as moderator.

1956:  May 6, Smoky Mountain Academy Choir visited Zion Hill Baptist Church. A special offering was taken and received $45.00 to help support the school. Camp Smoky is located there, now.

1956:  Rev. Doyle Suits preached the spring revival and ten were saved.

1956:  Contract given to Fred McMahan to add a T to the church. Total cost not to exceed $27,775.00.

1956:  October 21 - Zion Hill Baptist Church met for the purpose of ordaining Frank Strickland into the Ministry of the Gospel.

1957:  April, church voted to omit the program during Decoration. Had a program the following year.

1970's:  Opal Johnson served as the Church Clerk the entire decade. She served from 1967-1985.

1970:  Zion Hill Baptist Church members voted to install a kitchen in the basement of the church.

1970:  Many members attended the Billy Graham Crusade in May at Neyland Stadium.

1971:  Edmond Latham came to Zion Hill as pastor. He was born Nov. 29, 1919, to Michael & Mary Jane Latham. He was saved when he was 14 years old. He was married to Irene Reed and had one daughter, Mary Ellen. He felt the Lord calling him to preach in 1956. He has pastored 4 churches.

1973:  Purchased first organ.

1973:  Church celebrated its one-hundred year anniversary with a special service during the pastorate of Rev. Edmond Latham.

1975:  Members of the church purchased new Baptist Hymnals in memory or honor of a loved one. These replaced the much-worn Broadman Hymnals.

1976:  W. A. Galyon was called as pastor. He was born May 17, 1924, to Oscar & Flora Galyon. He was saved when he was 11 years old. He is married to Dorothy Hodges and together they have three daughters. He felt the Lord calling him to preach in 1943. He has pastored 14 churches. He left Zion Hill when called to be the Director of Missions for the Sevier County Baptist Association.

1976:  Church celebrated the Bicentennial of the United States with a special service featuring patriotic music.

1976:  Hosted the Wednesday session of the 91st Sevier County Baptist Association annual meeting. Rev.Ray F. Williams was moderator and brought the moderator’s message for the delegates.

1976:  March 7 was proclaimed Mark Martin Day at the church in honor of his visit to the Soviet Union with the University of Tennessee Band. He presented a concert for the church.

1976:  February 1976 was unusual! There were five Sundays. To commemorate that unique event, members present that Sunday signed a book in honor of this occurrence. The following is an incomplete list [not transcribed] of those present on Sunday, February 29 1976. This event will not take place again until the year 2004.

1976:  July 4th the church had a special service in honor of the bicentennial of the United States, featuring patriotic music.

1977:  Ordained Ralph Carr, Kenneth Galyon, Jimmy Loveday and Danny Pitner to serve as deacons for the church.

1977:  Started a church library.

1977:  Mark Martin gave a special concert for the church in recognition of his trip with the University of Tennessee band to Moscow.

1978:  The shortest pastorate at Zion Hill was 2 weeks and belongs to Guy Milam. He was born April 17, 1935, to Stephen & Rena Milam. He was saved when he was 9 years old. He is married to Maxine Rogers and together have three children. He felt the Lord calling him to preach in 1946 when he was eleven years old. He preached his first sermon when he was sixteen and has pastored 7 churches.

1978:  W. F. Hall, noted Bible teacher at Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy, served as interim pastor.

1979:   Rev. Ralph Cline was called as pastor. He was born Nov. 26, 1923, to Homer and Della Cline. He was saved when he was 13 years old. He was married to Helen Aultom and together had 2 daughters. (He was saved under the shed at Bell’s Camp Ground Baptist Church and today that shed is in the cemetery where Rev. Cline is interred.) He was ordained into the gospel ministry in 1947. He has pastored 7 churches.

In honor of Baptist Men's Day, the following men served the Lord at Zion Hill in the 1970's in the following church offices:

1981:  Rev. Ralph Cline entered his heavenly home. The decade of 1980's at Zion Hill Baptist Church was filled with many emotions. The decade began sadly for the church family with the untimely death of Rev. Ralph Cline to cancer. During his illness, Rev. Ray Williams filled the pulpit.

1982:  The church called Dr. Melvin Faulkner as interim. During Dr. Faulkner's service, the church completely remodeled the basement and sanctuary into the beautiful facility we enjoy today.

1984:  Licensed Greg Johnson to preach the Gospel.

1985:  The church set apart Roy Bradford, Jeff Johnson, Donnie Reed, and Carroll Trentham as deacons. They were ordained August 25, 1985.

1986:  Dedicated the newly remodeled sanctuary. The basement was completely remodeled. A fellowship hall was created from the hallway and two classrooms. New carpet and panelling were added along with new lights and a drop ceiling. The sanctuary was completely remodeled with all new lighting, pews, altar furniture, choir loft, and carpet. Worship services were held in the fellowship area while the sanctuary was remodeled. We enjoyed close fellowship!

1987:  The Rev. Philip Lane came to Zion Hill as pastor. He was born Nov. 13, 1944, in Murfreesboro, TN, to Paul & Erline Lane. He was saved when he was 16 years old. He is married to Fay Thompson and together have three sons. He felt the Lord calling him to preach in 1980. He has pastored 3 churches.

1987:  Hosted the Wednesday session of the 102nd Annual Meeting of the Sevier County Association of Baptists. Dr. Joe Wren, pastor of the FBC Sevierville, was moderator. Dr. W. W. Cope, pastor of FBC Pigeon Forge, brought an inspiring message based on the 11th Article of Faith, Evangelism and Missions, from Numbers. The Ladies of Zion Hill provided a sumptuous lunch. So much food was left that we enjoyed a fellowship meal before prayer meeting that night.

1988:  The beautiful baptistery scene was painted by Randall Ogle.

1988:  Church filled to capacity during revival services led by William Boyd Bingham, Jr., of Middlesboro, KY.

1988-89:  Purchased Zion Hill School property and began construction of a pastorium to provide a home for the pastor.

1988-89:  First church directory completed.

1988-89:  Amy Connatser and Beth Loveday represented the church in the State Bible Drill and were State Perfect winners.

1988-89:  Zion Hill Baptist Church took the "M" Night banners for High Attendance in 1983, 1984, and 1985. The church also received banners for "M" Night Efficiency Attendance in 1983 & 1984.

1988-89:  Richard D. Land, head of the Christian Life Commission, preached and reported on the work of the Commission. He is currently President of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.


1990:  December 23 - Dedicated the new pastorium for Zion Hill Baptist Church.

1990:  Purchased new Baptist Hymnals.

1990:   Purchased new grand piano.

1990:  Jason Bradford and Charlie Loveday were State Perfect winners in the State Bible Drill.

1991:  Senior Adult Ministry started. Called themselves Golden Harvesters and elected Nancy Valentine the first president.

1992:  Purchased new organ.

1993:  Dallas Moore ordained into the Gospel ministry.

1997:  New Church Directory.
